Ibuprofen can help ease the pain and swelling caused by jaw joint conditions, reports WebMD. Ice can also help alleviate the pain.

The most common reason for jaw pain is TMJ, notes WebMD. Pain relievers and ice or heat can help ease the pain. Eating softer foods such as soup or mashed potatoes can also soothe the pain. A mouthguard can be worn at night to prevent grinding or pressure on the jaw. If over-the-counter medications do not help, a dentist may be able to prescribe something stronger or do dental work. A bridge or crown may be needed to change the way the jaw clenches when biting down.
