Where does meiosis take place?

For humans, meiosis occurs in the reproductive organs of both males and females. Both genders make use of meiosis to produce their respective gametes.
Meisos is a complex process that involves two stages. For the female, meiosis is called oogenesis. This process produces oocytes, which in turn bear mature ova (eggs). For the male, the same process is called spermatogenesis. From the word itself, this refers to the production of sperm. These two different processes do not occur simultaneously, but they both begin in essentially the same way. All eukaryotic organisms that sexually reproduce undergo meiosis, plants and animals included.
