Methadone is commonly used as part of an addiction program to ease the symptoms of opiate withdrawal. Methadone is available in tablet, injectable and liquid forms, according to WebMD. It is sometimes known by the brand names Dolophine or Methadose.
Methadone is specially formulated to block the high that is caused by opiate use by targeting specific areas of the spinal cord and brain. It can also reduce the withdrawal symptoms and cravings experienced by someone who is addicted to heroin, morphine or codeine. Methadone is taken once daily, and its effects last for up to 36 hours, according to WebMD.
