Why was Midnight Sun never released?

Midnight Sun has not been released, as of 2015, because 12 chapters of the book were leaked onto the Internet in 2008. Author Stephenie Meyer voiced concerns that she would not be in the right frame of mind to complete it due to the novel's publicity.

Midnight Sun was intended to be a companion book to Meyer's bestselling novel Twilight. According to Meyer, the book is on an indefinite hold until she is confident that it is no longer in readers' minds.

Notably, Midnight Sun is written from the perspective of Edward Cullen, the vampire who marries and has a child with Twilight protagonist Bella Swan at the end of the Twilight series.
