Who is a military veteran?

A military veteran is a person who has served a term of service in the military and who has completed it with something other than a dishonorable discharge. In the United States, a person must have been on full-time active duty for 24 consecutive months to qualify for veterans benefits.

A U.S. veteran's service may occur in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard or Marine Corps. To claim the title of veteran, the service member must have been honorably discharged or retired. In the United States, some National Guard members may have difficulty meeting requirements for some veterans benefits.
