Milk of Magnesia is effective as a laxative, according to WebMD. It is an osmotic-type laxative that is thought to work by drawing water into the intestines, thus softening stool and inducing a bowel movement.

Drugs.com warns patients to use Milk of Magnesia only for occasional bouts of constipation and for no longer than seven days. It should not be used if symptoms such as nausea, stomach pain or vomiting are present. If side effects occur, such as rectal bleeding, severe nausea or vomiting, slow heartbeat or the feeling that one may pass out, one should call the doctor immediately. More common side effects include drowsiness or a warm, tingling feeling throughout the body.
