What is a mineral-based industry?

Mineral-based industries use any mineral, element or rock extracted from the ground that has potential value. Some examples of mined minerals are iron and cement compounds, such as gypsum.

The building industry uses many items that are mineral-based. Iron is the most important metal used in building structures. Steel bolts, nuts, screws and nails are treated with another metal, such as zinc, to prevent rusting. Lead is a mineral called galena that for many years was used in plumbing, but due to toxicity, most lead piping has been replaced with copper or plastic pipes. Quartz is a mineral used for glass windows. The metal used in house numbers come from the mineral chromite.
