The mission of the failed SpaceX launch was to bring supplies to the International Space Station. SpaceX's Dragon capsule was carrying over 4,000 pounds of cargo, including food, supplies and equipment for science experiments.

An unmanned, robotic SpaceX capsule launched in June 2015 encountered problems two minutes into its flight and broke apart in the air. Elon Musk, founder and CEO of SpaceX, attributed the explosion to a steel strut that broke due to acceleration force. The rocket's parachute, designed to spare the capsule's cargo from destruction, failed to deploy due to a malfunction in the software responsible for triggering the deployment mechanism.
