Does mm stand for million or thousand?

The acronym "mm" stands for "millimeter," which equals one thousandth of a meter and does not relate to either "million" or "thousand." The meter is the SI unit for measuring length.
The confusion with million and millimeter may arise from the prefix "milli" in both words. The prefix milli means "a thousandth," meaning divided by a thousand. Therefore, one millimeter is equal to one thousandth of a meter. So, although mm does not strictly mean one thousand or million, it nonetheless means one meter divided by one thousand. The prefix milli is somewhat similar to million, but one meter divided by a million is equal to a micrometer, not a millimeter.
