What is a modern day prophet?

A modern day prophet is an inspirational leader living in present or recent times. A modern day prophet often claims to be able to communicate directly with God. This term refers back to the prophets in Biblical times.

Many individuals have called themselves modern day prophets. According to Wikipedia, Joseph Smith, founder of the Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter-Day Saints, claimed to have a direct line of communication with God and was believed to be a prophet by the church that he founded. Modern day prophets are not only associated with the Christian faith; there are examples of individuals claiming to be modern day prophets in Hindi, Islamic and other religions.
