Are monthly bus passes economical?

Monthly bus passes are usually more economical for riders who need to make multiple regular trips per week, such as to work or school. They are especially economical with discounts and in cities where omnidirectional transfers are not provided.

To use the city of San Francisco as an example, a rider needs to make about 32 trips on the bus or light rail per month to make a regular fare adult monthly pass economical. Riders who go to and from work or school at least 16 days per month would therefore save money with a pass. Discounts for seniors, disabled, Medicare recipients and youth bring the pass price down considerably and make it extremely economical.
