Monument Valley is located on the borders of Arizona and Utah and is near the borders of Colorado and New Mexico. It lies within the range of the Navajo Nation Reservation and is part of the Colorado Plateau.
Monument Valley is well-known for its large sandstone buttes that reach up to 300 feet. Though it is only about 5 square miles in size, it has become a striking symbol of the American West. The valley's famous buttes have been featured extensively in pop culture, most notably American films set in the Old West. Monument Valley translates to Tsé Bii? Ndzisgaii in Navajo, meaning "valley of the rocks."
