A person who is 100 pounds or more over his recommended body weight or has a body mass index of 40 or more is morbidly obese, explains the Highland Hospital. The morbidly obese are at increased risk for sleep apnea, gallstones, heart disease, osteoarthritis, cancer and other conditions.

A BMI of 35 or more indicates morbid obesity if the person suffers from obesity-related health problems, such as diabetes or hypertension. BMI is determined based on a ratio of the person's weight compared to his height, explains the Highland Hospital. A BMI of 20 to 25 is considered to be within the normal range.
