What is moss phlox?

Moss phlox, also known as moss pink, mountain phlox or creeping phlox, is a flowering ground cover native to the eastern and central United States. Its flowers are red-purple, violet-purple, pink or white. Mature plants are about 6 inches high and 24 inches wide.

Moss phlox grows best in full sun, though some shade is preferable in regions with very hot summers. The plant requires a medium amount of water, although it is able to survive drought. Well-drained sandy or gravel soils are best. Deer do not seem to bother moss phlox, but rabbits do enjoy feeding on it. Spider mites and foliar nematodes are also potential pests.
