Berries from the mountain ash are edible. This tree is also commonly known as the dogwood, roundwood and missey-mossey tree. Many types of birds, including grouse, robins and jays, feed on these berries.
Small rodents such as squirrels also use mountain ash fruit as a source of food. People make jams and jellies out of the berries. For these recipes, the mild-tasting fruit is often combined with ginger and apples. The berries are acidic, so they are seldom eaten raw. Mountain ash are found in the eastern Canadian provinces. The trees also extend across the border as far south as Georgia and as far west as eastern parts of North and South Dakota.
