The Sierra Nevada mountain range separates California and Nevada, according to PBS. The mountains extend 250 miles northward from the Mojave Desert to the Cascade mountain range of northern California and Oregon.

In some northern parts of the mountain range it is 80 miles wide, but the range narrows to 40 miles farther south. The highest peak, Mount Whitney, stands at 14,500 feet, making it the tallest point in the continental United States. The range has a mild mountain climate, with a large amount of precipitation from November to April on the western side. The eastern slope is drier year-round. The highest elevations receive a great deal of snowfall, with an average of 33 to 38 feet annually.
