The California Coast Ranges Mountains run along most of California's coastline. They are broken up into the South Coast Ranges and the North Coast Ranges.
The Coast Range runs parallel to the coastline from the Oregon border to the Los Angeles basin. A break occurs at San Francisco, where the South and North Ranges split apart.
The Coast Ranges rise steeply from the ocean or the coastal plain, and reach heights of 8,000 feet in the North Range. The mountains encompass approximately two-thirds of California's coastline and run 550 to 600 miles. At most points, the crest of the range is no more than 50 miles from the ocean.
