The mountain range that runs through Central Italy is called the Apennine Mountains. This range is also known as the Appennino and runs from north to south throughout the country. It is composed of numerous smaller chains of mountains.
In its entirety, the Apennine Mountains are 750 miles in length and 250 miles in width. The highest point measures 9,554 feet and is known as "Corno Grande." Part of Corno Grande is covered by the Calderone glacier. Towards the southern end of the mountains, the habitat becomes semi-arid.
The Apennines meet the Ligurian Alps in the northwest and end at the city of Reggio de Calabria in the southwest.
