The Appalachian Mountains run from the Saint Lawrence Gulf in Canada to the U.S. state of Alabama. The mountain range is more than 1,500 miles long. Its highest point is located at Mount Mitchell in North Carolina, with an elevation of 6,684 feet.
The Appalachians are an ancient range of mountains that first formed around 480 million years ago. At one point, the mountains reached elevations comparable to those of the Alps, but they have since reduced in height due to erosion.
The mountain range was once physically connected to the Caledonian chain located in Scotland and Scandinavia, before the Mid-Atlantic Ridge forced the North American and Eurasian plates thousands of miles apart.
