Are most movies from Hong Kong based on books?

The majority of films produced and filmed in Hong Kong are not based on previously published books. Original screenplays primarily focusing on comedy, crime drama and martial arts dominate the Hong Kong market as of 2016.

Some high-profile Hong Kong film successes have been adapted from famous works of Chinese literature. Released in 2013 and earning $160 million in China, "Journey to the West" is based on the 16th century novel of the same name. This particular book has been adapted for the screen over a dozen times. Historical biographies are another source of book-based films in Hong Kong. The life of influential martial artist Ip Man has inspired several books and films.
