In spring 2013, the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie card was sold for $272,550. Just five years earlier, it was sold for $112,800.

Throughout his career, Mantle won the World Series seven times with the New York Yankees, the only team he ever played for. He was an outfielder known for his all-out play in the outfield. Mantle was also able to hit with power, amassing 565 career home runs.

Mantle's rookie baseball card became valuable because the majority that were printed were dumped in the Atlantic Ocean in 1960 due to low sales, a decision that baseball card creators Sy Berger and Woody Gelman regretted soon after.
