Recipients of Social Security disability insurance benefits can work an unlimited amount during the nine-month trial work period, according to Disability.gov. The nine months are completed within a 60-month period, according to Nolo. In 2015, any month when a recipient's earnings exceed $780 counts as a trial work period month.

After the trial work period is a 36-month extended period of eligibility, notes Disability.gov. During this period, recipients can continue working and still receive Social Security disability insurance benefits as long as their monthly earnings are not substantial. In 2015, the substantial gainful activity earnings limit is $1,090 or $1,820 for blind persons, reports Nolo.
