Hot chocolate can contain anywhere from 9 milligrams to 24 milligrams of caffeine. The caffeine content depends on several factors, such as the percent cacao of the product, where the cocoa beans were grown, how the beans were processed after harvest and the quantity of one serving size.

Chocolate itself does not contain very much caffeine; thus, the caffeine content of hot chocolate beverages is relatively low compared to that of other common caffeinated beverages. For example, an 8-ounce serving of brewed coffee contains about 140 milligrams of caffeine, while a 6-ounce serving of black tea contains about 65 milligrams.
