One pound of milk chocolate contains approximately 145 milligrams of caffeine. This is about the same amount found in one cup of coffee. In comparison, dark chocolate contains more caffeine, as it uses a more concentrated amount of cocoa nibs, which is the substance in chocolate that contains caffeine.
Cocoa beans contain between 0.1 percent and 0.7 percent caffeine. Caffeine is also found in the husks that surround the cocoa beans, usually from 0.05 percent to 0.3 percent. When chocolate is made, the husks are separated from the cocoa beans by breaking the beans into pieces. These pieces are known as cocoa nibs. The more cocoa nibs used to make the chocolate, the more caffeine it contains.
