How much can you earn per year before tax?

The average single adult in the United States working a normal full-time or part-time job can earn $10,150 per year before paying taxes, as of 2014. For a married couple filing jointly, that figure doubles to $20,300 as long as there are no children.
The numbers can vary if the tax or income situation is more complicated. For example, someone who can file as head of household can make up to $13,050 before owing tax, while someone who is claimed as a dependent by his parents can only earn $6,200 before owing tax. In addition, those who are independent contractors or own their own business are liable to self-employment tax after the first $400 of income.
