According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average computer numerically controlled (CNC) machinist's salary is $31,910 per year, as of 2010. CNC Machinists supervise and troubleshoot computer-automated equipment used in the production of plastics and metals.

Historically, CNC machinists have received on-the-job training, but there are now many community colleges and vocational schools that offer training courses in the field. The National Institute of Metalworking has devised a metric of skill standards in 24 different areas of CNC training, and has also created more than 50 individual skill certification programs related to the field. Different CNC training programs can last anywhere from three weeks to 12 months.
