How much does it cost to get a CTEC renewal?

Renewing a registration as a California Tax Education Council registered tax preparer costs $33 per year as of 2015. Any tax preparer wishing to do business legally in California must renew his registration by October 31 each year.

In addition to paying the annual registration fee, a CTEC tax preparer must take a minimum of 15 hours of continuing education regarding federal taxes and five hours on California taxes, all from a CTEC-approved educator. In addition, a CTEC tax preparer must renew his preparer tax identification number with the Internal Revenue Service each year and must maintain a $5,000 bond as a tax preparer.
