How much did the Apollo program cost?

Space travel requires a lot of research and preparation, and by the time the Apollo program wrapped up in the 1970s, its total cost was about $30 billion, which would be well more than $100 billion dollars in 2015 money. This total cost reflects work that took place over several years.
Though this may seem like a staggering amount of money, NASA argues that the federal budget for NASA was on par with other federal budget items for the day. For example, in 1975, the federal government allotted $3.3 billion to NASA, while the federal food stamp program had a budget of $5.5 billion.
