According to Edmunds Auto Observer, gas cost an average 20 cents per gallon in the United States in 1920. At that time, the average American made $1,500 per year.
The owner of a Model T which traveled 15 miles per gallon and traveled 10,000 miles per year would expect to pay $133 in annual gas costs. That would have been just short of 10 percent of the average American worker's annual income. In some areas of the United States, prices were even higher. A gasoline shortage in Oregon once caused prices to increase from 17 cents per gallon to 30 cents per gallon within six months.
