In 1983, the price of postage for a domestic letter was 20 cents. These stamps could be used to mail any letter that weighed 1 ounce or less. Letters that weighed more than 1 ounce could be mailed for an additional 20 cents per ounce.
The price of a stamp was 20 cents between 1981 and 1985. On Feb. 17, 1985, the U.S. Postal Service raised the price to 22 cents. The modern USPS sells Forever Stamps, which can be used to mail a letter regardless of any future increases to postage rates. However, Forever Stamps were not introduced until 2007.
