The Chevy 283 V8 engine produces 185 horsepower at 4,600 rotations per minute in its standard configuration. The engine was used by General Motors from 1957 until 1961. Later variations offer much higher horsepower.
The Chevy 283 engine was created when engineers at General Motors increased the bore of the Chevy 265 V8 engine first built in 1955. A fuel injected version that produced 275 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 315 horsepower at 6000 rpm was used by Corvette. This version of the engine produced 1 horsepower per cubic inch of engine, which was an impressive feat for factory-produced engines of the era.
