How much do mechanics typically charge for labor?

As of 2015, mechanics typically charge an average of $80 to $100 an hour for labor. Factors that contribute to labor costs include the mechanic or shop, the difficulty of repair work and whether or not they get assistance from other mechanics.
Labor costs sometimes cost more than the initial estimate because of unexpected issues that occur during repairs. If a particular repair normally takes an hour, but ends up requiring replacement of additional components and takes four hours, the mechanic charges the extra labor time to the consumer. The labor costs go toward paying salaries of mechanics working in an auto shop, as well as helping the shop to earn a profit.
