According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, meter readers make a median salary of approximately $36,400 per year. Meter readers are responsible for reading utility meters and recording the consumption of gas, electricity, water or steam.

Meter readers are most commonly employed by local governments and electric power companies. According to the BLS, the states that employ the largest numbers of meter readers include California, Texas, New York, Georgia and Florida. The top paying states for meter readers include Massachusetts (average annual salary $59,010), Connecticut ($58,390), New York ($51,210), New Hampshire ($50,560) and Alaska ($50,330). Meter readers are required to have a high school diploma and may or may not need experience in the field to assume an entry-level position.
