According to the BLS, the states that employ the largest numbers of meter readers include California, Texas, New York, Georgia and Florida. The top paying states for meter readers include Massachusetts (average annual salary $59,010), Connecticut ($58,390), New York ($51,210), New Hampshire ($50,560) and Alaska ($50,330). Meter readers are required to have a high school diploma and may or may not need experience in the field to assume an entry-level position.
