Salaries paid to church employees depend upon the size of the church and the funds available. Many small churches have no salaried employees. On average, churches allocated 58 percent of their 2013 budgets for personnel expenses, according to a 2012 study conducted by the Evangelical Christian Credit Union.

The salaries for pastors, typically the largest expense in the personnel budget, range from $0 for small churches with little to no monetary resources to hundreds of thousands of dollars paid to those pastoring mega-churches. The average pastor salary in 2012 was $28,000, or just over $2,333 per month, according to the National Association of Church Business Administration. Mega-church pastors, however, received an average salary of $147,000 in 2010, or $12,250 per month, as claimed by The Leadership Network.
