How much money is spent on Christmas each year?

According to the American Research Group, as of Nov. 15, 2013, Americans planned to each spend an average of $801 for Christmas gifts. This was down from $854 the previous year.

Over the past decade, Christmas spending reached its peak in 2001 when Americans spent an average of $1,052 and reached similar levels in 2004 at $1,004. Both values were approximately $600 when adjusted for inflation. Online purchases have increased from 29 percent in 2003 to 43 percent in 2013. Similarly, 23 percent of Americans said in 2013 that they would pay full price for gifts, up from 18 percent in 2012.
