According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, veterinary technicians make a median wage of $30,290 per year, or $14.56 an hour, as of May 2012. Those technicians who work at higher-education institutions and for the state earn a median wage of $37,190.

Veterinary technicians who work in research and development earn a median wage of $35,810, and those working for veterinary services earn a median salary of $29,920. The upper 10 percent of veterinary technicians make more than $44,030, and the bottom 10 percent make less than $21,030. Nontraditional business hours, including holiday work, are the norm for many technicians.
