UrbanSitter.com reports that reasonable babysitting rates in the United States vary by region. In the organization's 2013 survey of almost 6,000 families, San Francisco came in as most expensive at $14 per hour for one child, $16.75 per hour for two children and $19.25 per hour for three children.

Denver had lower rates, as reported by UrbanSitter.com, with an average hourly pay of $10.25 for one child. Across the United States, nannies made as much as $2 per hour more than babysitters, with the national average pay for nannies at $13.50 per hour for one child, $15.50 for two children and $17.25 for three children.

About one-third of parents who participated in the survey said they engage a babysitter once or twice a month. An additional one-third said they hire a babysitter four to six times per year.
