SFGate states that it is inadvisable to charge less than 1.1 percent for homes valued at less than $100,000. For homes valued above $125,000, the rent should not be less than one percent of the home's value. The more expensive the home, the lower the percentage of the home's value that is used in the calculation. This is because the higher the rent is, the fewer renters there are who can afford it.
