For individuals interested in keeping chickens for eggs, roosters have little value and are often given away for free. In 2014, a young rooster costs $5 to $15. Newly hatched chickens, half of which are roosters, can be purchased in 2014 for $3 to $5.

For rare breeds of chickens, the prices are much higher. A newly hatched chicken of a rare breed may cost as much as $50. High-quality mature roosters of certain rare breeds may cost as much as $1,500; however, in general, a mature rooster of a rare breed can be purchased for $150 to $400 in 2014.
