How much does a root canal cost without dental insurance?

As of January 2015, the average cost of a root canal in the United States ranges between $500 and $1,000, according to Consumer Guide to Dentistry. This is an estimate for the root canal procedure only and does not include additional procedures that may be performed with a root canal.
A root canal is a dental procedure in which infected or traumatized pulp tissue is removed from a tooth. A tooth generally contains three parts: the outer shell; the middle layer, called dentin; and the innermost layer, called the dental pulp. When dental pulp becomes traumatized or infected, a root canal may be necessary to prevent further damage to the tooth.
