As of 2014, the sales tax rate in Boston, Massachusetts is 6.25 percent, according to the Tax Foundation.The City of Boston does not charge consumers an additional sales tax percentage on top of the state rate.
The Massachusetts Department of Revenue states that the sales tax is enforced on all tangible property and some telecommunications sales and rentals in the state. In most circumstances, the consumer pays the sales tax at the time of purchase to the vendor and the vendor pays the sales tax to the government. In the case of motor vehicle and trailer sales, the consumer is required to pay the sales tax amount directly to the government at the time of purchase.
