As of 2015, the sales tax in Texas at the state level is set at 6.25%, according to Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts website. Some local jurisdictions may also have their own tax rates, which would be levied in addition to the state tax on purchases. However, as mandated by state law, the combined state and local sales tax cannot exceed 8.25%.
Local sales tax rates in Texas can be levied by either the city, county, transit authority or from a special purpose district. At the city level, sales tax rates vary between 0.25 to 2% of the value of the goods being purchased. A local transit authority can also add between 0.25 to 1% of additional sales tax in Texas.
