The sales and use tax rate in Texas is 6.25 percent. However, local cities, counties, transit authorities and other local government agencies have the ability to add up to 2 percent to the state sales tax rate, which may raise the rate up to 8.25 percent.
Goods and services subject to sales and use tax in Texas include retail sales, leasing or renting goods, Internet, phone, cable and satellite television, amusement services, gasoline, alcohol, personal services, and debt collection. Most grocery items are not subject to sales tax, but some items such as soda, fruit juice that contains less than 50 percent juice, ice cream bars and other snack foods are taxed.
