Canadian tax rates vary by province; for example, the tax rate in Alberta, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories is 5 percent, while the rate in Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Ontario is 13 percent, according to the Canada Business Network. In Quebec, the tax rate is 14.975 percent.
Canadian tax rates in some areas include two types of taxes, including goods and services tax, or GST, and harmonized sales tax, or HST, notes the Canada Revenue Agency. Canadians pay no sales tax on exempt items and services, including staple grocery items such as vegetables, bread and milk; agricultural products including raw wool and grains; medical devices and dentures; and prescription drugs, as of 2015.
