The extent and duration of required police officer training depends on state and county requirements. The average training period involves 18 weeks of instruction at a police academy, according to DiscoverPolicing.org. Graduates of the academy program then undergo practical field training for an average of eight weeks.

Police academy students receive training in a variety of subjects, including firearms, first aid, emergency vehicle operation, criminal law and self-defense techniques. Other common subjects include ethics, basic investigative techniques, patrol procedures, cultural diversity and the use of nonlethal weaponry. Some police academies also offer instruction in computers and foreign languages.

Post-academy field training typically includes mentorship with an experienced police officer. During this time, academy graduates accompany their mentors on patrol.
