The United States. federal deficit does not consistently increase each fiscal year as it is a measure of how much the government's budgetary outlays (expenditures) exceed its total receipts (income). In 2015, the deficit was estimated to be $564 billion, more than the 2014 deficit of $483 billion, but less than the 2013 deficit of $680 billion. In 2010, the federal deficit was $1,294 billion, $1,300 billion in 2011 and $1,087 billion in 2012.
The federal deficit was $161 billion in 2007, having fallen from $248 billion in 2006 and $318 billion in 2005. It increased to $458 billion in 2008 and $1,413 billion in 2009.
