How much do used tires cost in comparison to new tires?

Used tires can cost more than 50 percent less than new tires, depending on the source and their age, says Bankrate.com. Used tires with good tread are sometimes half-price when sold by mechanics or at junk yards. Other vendors may sell the previous year's new, unused tires at discount prices.
While used tires may cost less, they may also be less safe than new tires, notes Consumer Reports. Used tires may have internal defects that are not evident due to being driven at an excessive speed or while overloaded or underinflated. Neither Consumer Reports nor Bankrate.com recommend buying used tires.
