How much does a veterinarian make per year?

As of May of 2012, veterinarians make an average of $84,460 a year in the United States. This can vary according to the practice location and specialty, however.
Veterinarians normally either treat small animals commonly kept as pets, such as dogs, cats and those of the rodent family or livestock or exotic animals. Veterinarians attend 4 years of specialized medical training after graduating from colleges similar to regular doctors. They must also be licensed by the state in which they practice. Veterinarians often have their own small practice, but others may work in group clinics and zoos or travel to farms and other locations to treat the animals.
