When was Muhammad born?

The prophet Muhammad was born in 570 in Mecca, a town in western Arabia. Muhammad was born into the Quraish tribe, the most powerful in the area of Mecca. Muhammad died in the town of Medina, on June 8, 632, following an illness.

Followers of Islam consider Muhammad the founder of their religion and think of him as the last in the line of prophets that include other religious figures such as Moses and Jesus. When he was nearly 40 years old, Muhammad began having visions and hearing voices in his head. It was these visions and revelations from the archangel Gabriel that were the basis for the Qur'an, the book that serves as scripture for Muslims across the world.
