What is a mullein flower?

Mullein flowers bloom on the mullein herb. The yellow flowers are used in oil infusions to treat earaches as long as the eardrum is not compromised. The flowers also can be mixed with water to clean minor scrapes, and a tea made from steeped flowers often soothes irritated sinuses.

New mullein plants produce flat, open-face flowers in their second growing season. The flowers grow up to 1 inch in diameter, and they should be harvested each day shortly after they bloom. Mullein, part of the snapdragon family, grows up to 8 feet tall, and the herb often thrives in the wild.
